OREPA calls for new Environmental Impact Statement for Oak Ridge, cites new seismic data

The Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance today called for a new Environmental Impact Statement for the Y12 Nuclear Weapons Complex and the new bomb plant”the Uranium Processing Facility”planned for Y12.

“Concerns about the ability of facilities here to withstand an earthquake, and what will happen if they fail, are at the heart of safety concerns at Y12,” noted OREPA’s Coordinator, Ralph Hutchison. “The new report from the US Geological Survey says the risk in Oak Ridge is increased beyond what was believed in 2008. In fact, the increase is among the highest in the nation. At the same time, current facilities are getting older. It’s time for a new, closer look based on today’s information.”
