Remembering Birmingham Fifty Years Later

The Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama with a special puppet presentation, Sanctuary: The Sixteenth St Church Bombing in September.

The first performance, Friday, September 13 at the Beck Cultural Center on Dandridge Avenue in Knoxville will begin at 6:30; the puppet drama will be followed by a screening of Spike Lee’s “4 Little Girls,” a documentary of the bombing.

The second performance will be Sunday, September 15 at Church of the Savior (UCC) at 934 N Weisgarber Road in Knoxville; no screening of the movie is planned for the second performance.

Both events are free and open to all.

Sunday Vigil

OREPA has held Sunday vigils every week for more than 22 years at the main entrance to the Y-12 Nuclear Weapons Complex (intersection of Scarboro Rd and East Bear Creek Road) at 5:00pm ET. We are outdoors and space our chairs; when covid numbers are up, we encourage people to wear masks. Bring your own chair, we have some umbrellas for sun shade or rain.
